Mercosur (also called Mercosul) is the Mercado Común del Sur (Common Market of the South, SUR/SUL means South), an economic zone covering Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The Network of LGBT Organizations of the Common Market of the South was founded to advocate nationally, internationally, and regionally across the zone. Organizations within the Mercosur are encouraged to join.

According to its organizational Constitution, the Network aims "to participate and to influence the processes of negotiation in the matter of human rights and antidiscrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, before the Mercosur, the O.A.S., the UN and any other international instance before which we decide to approach a regional position in the matter." Along with commiting itself to fortify the relations and the interchange of experiences between LGTB organizations of the Mercosur and to promote and to improve the bonds of the groups, the Network will advance actions for "installing in each country a National Day against Discrimination by Sexual Orientation and/or Gender Identity and the Expression of Homo/Lesbo/Transfobia, for the 17 of May."
