Zambia Independent Montoring Team (ZIMT)
The Zambia Independent Montoring Team is a human rights group that has been instrumental in ensuring Zambia adheres to basic human rights as it develops toward a stable and lasting democracy. Facing fierce and vocal government interference with freedom of expression and association, ZIMT leader Alfred Zulu (a credit to straight activists everywhere) oversaw the formation of the Lesbian, Gay and Transgender Association (LEGATRA) - the first such Zambian gay group organized to confront the nation's institutionalized discrimination. ZIMT's understanding and commitment to human rights in such a hostile political environment is invaluable to the democratic citizens of Zambia. The Zambia Independent Monitoring Team is part of SAHRiNGON - The Southern Africa Human Rights NGO Network. ZIMT can be reached by email, by telephone, and by post:
